Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists on the Forward Operating Base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 12:20am on Monday, August 10, 2026, when a large number of ISWAP fighters launched an assault on the military position in an attempt to overrun the base. The troops responded with sustained firepower, forcing the terrorists to withdraw after suffering casualties.
According to a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force, North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, several terrorists were neutralised during the engagement, while troops recovered weapons, ammunition and communication gadgets from the attackers.
He added that surveillance footage reviewed after the encounter also confirmed several casualties being evacuated by the fleeing terrorists.
The military disclosed that some troops sustained injuries during the encounter after part of the defensive position was temporarily breached, while some combat equipment and vehicles were damaged by rocket-propelled grenade fire.
The injured personnel were subsequently airlifted and are said to be stable and receiving medical attention.
Following the attack, troops remained deployed in and around the Forward Operating Base and adjoining areas to dominate the general area, monitor developments and prevent further attempts by the terrorists to re-engage.
The Theatre Command urged residents of Gajiram and surrounding communities to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, while encouraging them to report suspicious movements to security agencies.
It said troops would maintain high vigilance as the exploitation of the operational area and assessment of the terrorists’ casualties and activities continued.
