Albert Akota, who always introduced himself with a touch of humor as “Albert the son of Akota.” A man who brought laughter and joy to everyone he encountered, Albert’s infectious spirit will be sorely missed. To many, he was an extraordinary person who had a profound impact on his colleagues, friends, and loved ones.
Albert was a true embodiment of happiness. His jovial nature could light up even the gloomiest of rooms. No matter what struggles he faced in life, he always found a way to share his burden through humor. Albert’s ability to crack jokes, even when faced with personal trials, showcased his resilience and unwavering optimism. We could count on him to bring a smile to our faces, no matter the circumstances.
Our path crossed when I joined the FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN in 2013, as a green horn sports reporter. He wanted to get close, sensing that we both originated from Edo State, but with reticent I welcomed him. My reception towards him changed when we lost a reporter, Mr.Ramsey who coincidentally hailed from Edo; rock solid, like the rock of Gibraltar, Albert stood during the grief period and beyond.
Albert, the son of Akota cheated death severally, at least I can attest to one on July 29, 2016 in Asaba, Delta state. In the early hours of the said day, at a hotel in Asaba, we were in the capital city of Delta state to attend the burial ceremony of the late Stephen Keshi, when tragedy struck. Martin Odiete, Arafat Aliu, Remisola Kisu and my humble self were in the same hotel, en route to Keshi’s home town, Ileh (a few minutes drive from Asaba). A bang on my door at 4am with a voice screaming, “Oga I be the receptionst, your brother dey die, e say make I call you.” Without hesitation, I jumped off my bed and dashed into his room, only to find the son of Akota gasping for breath. With my little experience in first aid and the help of God, tragedy was averted.
As a seasoned sports journalist and editor for People’s Daily Abuja, Albert not only possessed an incredible talent for reporting on sports but also had an unmatched passion for the games he covered. His dedication to his craft was admirable, and his insights were invaluable. Whether it was on the football field or in the boxing ring, Albert had an innate ability to capture the essence of the games he covered and relayed it to his readers with passion and enthusiasm. His articles were a joy to read, and his love for the sporting world was contagious.
Beyond his professional achievements, Albert was a true friend to many. He was the life of the party, always the first to tell a joke or lend an empathetic ear. He had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched. His warm presence and caring nature will forever be treasured by those fortunate enough to have called him a friend.
Today, as we mourn the loss of Albert at the tender age of 47, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life he led. Though his time with us was too short, his impact will continue to live on in our hearts and memories. May we find solace in the laughter he shared with us, the stories he told, and the love he showered upon us all.
