Jimoh Joseph of the Aurum Tennis Academy in Abuja, the top seed in the ongoing Zenith Bank Next Generation Masters, struggled against one of Nigeria’s upcoming Tennis prodigies, Seyi Ogunsakin, but came through 11-9, 10-3 to secure a semifinal berth.
Basit Ajao of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club also had a taste of the challenge coming behind them when the national 14 & under champion Dubem Amasiani led 6-2 in the second set super tie-break before he rallied to win 10-8, 10-7.
In the girls event, Etoro Bassey from Geuf Tennis Academy in Uyo won her second round robin match against Mary Udoffa of Kogi State to secure har semi fianl place from Group B. She has been joined in the semifinal by Success Ogunjobi of the Aurum Academy who beat the No.1 seed Idowu Lagundoye from Ondo State in her second group match.
However, Aina Henry gave his Ondo teammates a lot to smile about and a fighting chance for a semifinal place when he ploughed from 4-9 down in the final set tie breaker against John Peter of Lagos to win 11-9.
The final round robin matches will be played Friday starting at 10 am at the Ikoyi Club which is hosting the tournament.
