…Captain Adaora Elonu has bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award
Nigeria’s D’Tigress on Sunday in Yaounde, Cameroun defended the Women’s Afrobasket title at the expense of hard-fighting Mali by 70-59 at the Palais Polyvalent des Sports Yaounde, Cameroon Sunday night.
Captain Adaora Elonu a four-time Women’s AfroBasket participant, who plies her trade in Spain won the tournament Most Valuable Player and was also named among the All-Tournament team of the 26th edition of Africa’ premier women’s championship.
Elonu scooped 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and one block to lead Nigeria past Mali.
Joining Elonu in the All-Star team were Nigeria point guard and 2019 MVP, Ezinne Kalu, Senegal’s Yacine Diop, Cameroon youthful forward Marina Paule Ewodo and Mali massive center, Mariam Coulibaly.
Even though her team, Mozambican did not make it to the podium but forward Tamara Seda was the best rebounder of FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2021 with a total of 52 rebounds; Egypt swingman Nadine Mohammed won the best scorer award with 101 points while Cote D’Ivoire guard Salimata Berte won the best three-pointer award with 16 made shot from behind the arch.
Cape Verde were awarded the fair-play award of the championship just as trio of Astou Traore of Senegal, Nacissela Mauricio of Angola and Aisha Mohammed Balarabe of Nigeria were honoured by FIBA Africa Region for their dedication to the sport and their national teams.
Nigeria also won the 2017 and 2019 editions.
