The United States Department of State has revoked more than 175,000 visas held by foreign nationals under the administration of President Donald Trump, citing criminal offences, violations of visa conditions, immigration fraud, threats to public safety and national security.
The State Department announced the figure on Monday, saying most of the visa revocations followed encounters between visa holders and law enforcement authorities.
According to the department, criminal activity, assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related offences were among the leading reasons for the cancellations.
The State Department said visas were also revoked from foreign nationals accused or charged with offences including child abuse, sexual assault, reckless driving, fraud and embezzlement.
The department said the action formed part of its continuing vetting of foreign nationals and efforts to ensure that individuals who violate US laws or abuse the immigration system do not retain their visas.
The latest figure represents a significant increase from January, when the State Department announced that more than 100,000 visas had been revoked since Trump returned to office. Reuters reported that the January figure was described by the department at the time as a record.
Serious criminal cases cited
In announcing the latest figures, the State Department highlighted several cases involving foreign nationals who had come under law enforcement scrutiny.
Among the cases cited were foreign nationals charged with serious offences including rape, sexual battery, kidnapping, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of minors.
The department also cited cases involving allegations of child sexual abuse material, domestic violence, drug-related offences and driving under the influence.
In one case, a foreign national was charged with felony rape and sexual battery involving a mentally disabled victim.
Another foreign national was arrested in connection with violent resistance to arrest, drunk driving and domestic violence, while another was charged with kidnapping, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor.
The department also cited a case involving a foreign national charged with multiple counts of possessing child sexual abuse material and another charged with offences involving a child.
The cases were presented by the State Department as examples of the circumstances under which visas have been revoked.
Fraud and financial crimes
The department also highlighted cases involving alleged financial crimes.
One foreign national was linked to what the US government described as a multimillion-dollar Medicaid fraud scheme involving more than $5m in allegedly fraudulent services.
Other cases cited by the department involved fraud and embezzlement.
The State Department said such conduct could result in visa cancellation when it demonstrates that a visa holder has violated US law or no longer meets the requirements for holding a US visa.
Birth tourism cases
Reuters reported that the State Department also disclosed the revocation of more than 100 visas in North Africa in cases involving what the department described as “birth tourism” — travel to the United States for the purpose of giving birth.
The development forms part of the administration’s broader effort to tighten scrutiny of foreign nationals and enforce immigration and visa rules.
Visas revoked over support for violence
The State Department also said it had revoked visas belonging to multiple foreign nationals who celebrated the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The action was cited among the cases involving foreign nationals whose statements or conduct, according to the US government, raised concerns under its visa and national security policies.
Increased visa scrutiny
The latest action follows a broader increase in visa scrutiny under the Trump administration.
In August 2025, the State Department had already begun reporting increased cancellations of student and other visas, while the administration has continued to emphasise criminal conduct, immigration violations and national security concerns in its vetting of foreign nationals. Reuters reported in August 2025 that hundreds of student visas had been revoked on grounds including criminal conduct and, in some cases, terrorism-related concerns.
The State Department said its latest revocations were directed at foreign nationals who violated visa terms, committed crimes, defrauded Americans, called for violence against US citizens, abused the immigration system or posed national security threats.
The department’s announcement did not indicate that the more than 175,000 revocations were limited to nationals of particular countries.
The latest figure underscores the scale of the Trump administration’s ongoing visa enforcement campaign, with the State Department continuing to review the status of foreign nationals whose conduct comes to the attention of US authorities.
