Two senior commanders of a terrorist group operating in the North-East have surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI, providing what the military described as valuable intelligence expected to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the region.
The development marks another significant breakthrough in the military’s sustained campaign against insurgency, with the surrender coming amid intensified land and air offensives across the North-East theatre.
The two insurgent leaders, identified by military authorities as holding the rank of Munzir within the terrorist hierarchy, reportedly surrendered to troops of Sector 2 in Geidam, Yobe State, on July 4 before being moved to Maiduguri the following day.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said the surrendered commanders are currently in military custody undergoing profiling, debriefing and intelligence assessment.
According to the military, preliminary interrogations revealed that the former commanders occupied strategic positions within the terrorist organisation and possess extensive knowledge of its operational structure, logistics network and command arrangements.
“The information obtained from the debriefing has provided valuable insights into the terrorists’ operational methods, sustainment mechanisms and support networks,” the statement said.
Military authorities noted that intelligence gathered from the pair is expected to support ongoing operations aimed at locating and dismantling remaining terrorist hideouts across the North-East.
The military attributed the latest surrender to sustained pressure mounted on insurgent groups through coordinated ground and air operations, as well as enhanced intelligence-driven missions conducted by troops and allied security partners.
According to Operation HADIN KAI, the continuous offensives have significantly degraded the fighting capability of terrorist groups, disrupted their supply chains and weakened their command structures.
“The relentless military pressure continues to deny the terrorists freedom of movement, degrade their combat capability and erode their command and control structures,” the statement added.
Security analysts have noted an increase in the number of insurgents and commanders surrendering in recent years as military operations intensify across the Lake Chad Basin and Sambisa axis.
The military described the latest surrender as a major setback for the terrorist group and evidence of the growing fragmentation within its ranks.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the offensive against insurgent elements, stressing that troops would continue to exploit actionable intelligence and intensify operations until all terrorist threats in the region are neutralised or compelled to surrender.
The military also pledged continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders to restore lasting peace, security and stability across the North-East.
