Troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 16 civilians during separate operations in Zamfara State and repelled a terrorist attack on a community in Sokoto State.
The military said the operations, conducted on August 28, also frustrated attempts by terrorists to abduct residents and passengers in different communities within Zamfara.
In one of the operations, troops of Sector 2 responded to a distress call over an attempted attack on a community in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The terrorists were said to have attempted to abduct residents before troops arrived and engaged the attackers, forcing them to flee.
Four civilians were rescued during the operation, while troops subsequently dominated the area to prevent further attacks.
Later in the day, troops responded to reports of terrorist activities around Kwanoni Village in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state.
On arrival, the troops reportedly encountered terrorists attempting to abduct passengers travelling in two vehicles and engaged them in a firefight.
The terrorists were forced to withdraw, abandoning the passengers they had targeted.
A total of 12 passengers were rescued, with the military confirming that no casualty was recorded among the troops during the operation.
In a separate incident in Sokoto State, terrorists launched an attack around Jabo Village in Tambuwal Local Government Area.
Troops were said to have responded swiftly and engaged the attackers with what the military described as superior firepower, forcing them to retreat.
Two civilians sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and were promptly evacuated for medical attention.
“Troops continued to dominate the area to deny the terrorists freedom of action,” the military said.
The Joint Task Force said the operations underscored the determination of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to protect civilians and frustrate terrorist activities across its area of responsibility.
“The successful rescue of the civilians and repulsion of the terrorist attack further demonstrate the determination and responsiveness of troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA in protecting lives and frustrating terrorist activities across the Joint Operations Area,” the statement said.
