Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted mass abduction by terrorists in Unguwar Rogo Village, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, rescuing nine civilians, including an infant.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, after troops received a distress call that terrorists had infiltrated the community and attacked civilians travelling along a local route.
According to the Joint Task Force, the terrorists were believed to have been led by a suspected kingpin, Mallam Shuaibu.
Preliminary intelligence indicated that the attack may have been carried out in retaliation for the recent arrest of suspected collaborators linked to the terrorist network.
The suspects had reportedly been intercepted by troops while attempting to procure motorcycles and Premium Motor Spirit in support of the terrorists’ activities.
Terrorists Open Fire on Vehicles
In an apparent reprisal attack, the terrorists reportedly concealed themselves in a millet farm along the route and opened fire on passing vehicles.
The gunfire caused some motorists to lose control of their vehicles and veer off the road, creating an opportunity for the terrorists to abduct civilians.
However, troops from Sector 2 swiftly mobilised to the area following the distress call and engaged the terrorists.
The superior response of the troops forced the attackers to abandon their operation and flee into the surrounding forest.
The military subsequently rescued nine civilians, including an infant, from the scene.
Two women who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack were evacuated for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.
Troops Sustain Pressure on Terrorist Networks
Operation FANSAN YAMMA reaffirmed its determination to deny terrorists and other criminal elements the freedom to attack innocent civilians across the North-West.
The Joint Task Force said it would continue to sustain pressure on terrorist networks while taking necessary measures to protect lives and restore lasting peace and security in the region.
“Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains resolute in its determination to deny terrorists and other criminal elements the freedom to attack innocent citizens,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
