The recent arrest of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa sends shockwaves through Delta State, illuminating a profound crisis in governance and integrity among those entrusted with our public funds.
As someone who has consistently advocated for good governance, accountability, and transparency, I must voice my deep disappointment in Okowa’s actions, or more precisely, his deafening silence in the face of grave allegations.
His refusal to deny these accusations outright, even after several calls by well respected leaders in the state is tantamount to an admission of guilt, casting a dark shadow over the future of governance in Delta state.
It should be noted that, for years, Delta State has battled the corrosive effects of corruption, which have robbed us of much-needed development.
Schools, hospitals, roads, and industries that should have flourished instead deteriorated, starving our people of the opportunities they rightly deserve.
Whereas, Okowa’s leadership tenure promised a new direction, but in reality as demonstrated by these allegations and his deafening silence, his administration was no different from others that enriched themselves at the expense of the public.
Emphatically, silence, in matters of public trust, is not a neutral act, it is a dangerous statement of complicity. Therefore, Okowa’s reluctance to engage with the public or the media on these allegations speaks volumes.
A leader with nothing to hide would vehemently challenge false accusations, not slink into silence. His inaction not only implies guilt but also disrespects the very people who once trusted him with the future of Delta State.
Unfortunately, but extremely necessary, it is time for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the judiciary to demonstrate their commitment to justice.
The EFCC must thoroughly investigate these allegations without fear or favor, and the judiciary should be resolute in delivering justice, free from political influence. This is a watershed moment for both institutions, and they must seize this opportunity to reinforce the public’s waning trust in our institutions.
The mandate of justice in this case is clear: if found guilty, Okowa should be compelled to return every misappropriated kobo to Delta State. These funds were meant to uplift our communities, to bring sustainable development, and to empower our youth.
Delta state has suffered enough; it is time we start reclaiming our resources from those who sought personal gain instead of collective prosperity.
I urge every well-meaning Deltan to remain vigilant and vocal in demanding accountability. This moment is a clarion call for all advocates of transparency and good governance.
We must ensure that the era of impunity ends here.
Okowa’s fate should serve as a message to all current and future leaders: the people of Delta State will no longer tolerate corruption or betrayal.
Our call for justice goes beyond Okowa, it is a demand for a new era of governance.
