Nigeria’s Minister for Youth and Sports Development, MR. SUNDAY DARE has appointed former track queen, CHIEF MARY ONYALI (MFR) as the new Special Adviser on Sports.
Information made available to sunrisetimes.com.ng says the announcement was officially made during a meeting the Minister had with the executive members of the NIGERIA OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (NOC) on Tuesday 8 October 2019 in Abuja.
MARY ONYALI (MFR) has represented Nigeria at major Championships like the OLYMPIC GAMES, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, AFRICAN GAMES and the COMMONWEALTH GAMES.
In a glorious career spanning almost two decades ONYALI won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in BARCELONA 92, a feat she repeated in ATLANTA 96 OLYMPICS.
She won in total seven AFRICAN GAMES individual medals in the sprints and two gold medals at the 1994 COMMONWEALTH GAMES in VICTORIA, CANADA.
Since making her international debut for Nigeria at 18years in 1986 at the inaugural WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS in Athletics held in ATHENS, GREECE, ONYALI went on to represent her country at FIVE OLYMPICS EVENTS ,FOUR ALL AFRICAN GAMES COMPETITIONS, FIVE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS and at the 1994 COMMONWEALTH GAMES in CANADA.
In a beautiful end to a Golden career, ONYALI had her last competitive outing for Nigeria at the 2004 OLYMPICS games in ATHENS, GREECE where it all began eighteen years earlier.
