Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave, his first since assuming office on May 29, 2023, following the approval of President Bola Tinubu.
The leave, which began on Thursday, is expected to provide the Vice President with time for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to enhance his capacity for continued service.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha.
According to the statement, Shettima will use the period to review the Tinubu administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues and prepare for future responsibilities as the Federal Government intensifies the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The leave offers Senator Shettima an opportunity to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for the responsibilities ahead as the Federal Government intensifies the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement read.
Nkwocha noted that since taking office, the Vice President had remained actively involved in coordinating and supervising key government programmes, particularly in the areas of economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.
The statement added that Shettima has continued to chair meetings of the National Economic Council, comprising the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior public officials, where policies affecting the economy and citizens’ welfare are discussed.
“He has also chaired the National Economic Council, which brings together the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant public officials to deliberate on policies affecting the economy and the welfare of Nigerians,” Nkwocha stated.
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, the Vice President has represented President Tinubu at several international and regional engagements focused on economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.
The Presidency said Shettima remained committed to supporting the President’s vision of building a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.
“Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement added.
The Presidency said the Vice President would resume his official duties at the end of the two-week leave.
“The Vice President will return to office at the end of the two-week leave period and resume his official responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation,” the statement said.
