The Benue State Police Command has arrested some suspects in connection with the blockade of the convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, during his visit to the state on Tuesday.
The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed this on Wednesday at a press conference in Makurdi, although he did not state the number of suspects arrested.
Nwadiogbu said the police officers deployed for Obi’s visit acted professionally and tactically to prevent the situation from escalating into violence, noting that the decision should not be mistaken for inaction.
According to him, Obi’s movement was obstructed by a group of people, creating tension that could have degenerated into violence and destruction of property.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Obi’s movement was obstructed by a group of persons, creating tension and a situation that could have degenerated into violence,” the police commissioner said.
He said the command subsequently ensured that the former Anambra State governor was safely escorted back to the airport, from where he departed the state peacefully.
Nwadiogbu said the command had commenced intelligence-led operations to identify everyone involved in the incident, adding that some arrests had already been made.
“The Command has commenced intelligence-led operations to identify those responsible. Key arrests have been made, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend all other persons connected with the incident,” he said.
The commissioner reiterated that the police remained a neutral and professional institution and would protect the rights of Nigerians irrespective of their political affiliation, status or personal beliefs.
“Every Nigerian has the right to freedom of movement, irrespective of political affiliation, status or personal belief. No individual or group has the right to unlawfully obstruct another person’s movement,” Nwadiogbu stated.
He assured the public that anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law, while urging residents to remain calm and allow the police to conclude their investigation.
