The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the latest wave of killings in Benue and Plateau states, describing the attacks as tragic, disturbing and unacceptable.
Obi, in a statement shared via his X handle on Monday, expressed concern over the killing of at least 18 people in separate attacks in Benue State and the murder of nine members of a family, including a two-month-old baby, in Plateau State.
The former Anambra State governor said the incidents underscored the persistent security challenges confronting several communities across the country and called for urgent reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
The attacks in Benue occurred in the Otukpo-Nobi community and Akpachi village in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed no fewer than 18 persons during separate raids over the weekend.
In Plateau State, nine members of a family were reportedly killed when assailants attacked Kum and Wereng-Camp communities in Riyom Local Government Area on Saturday night.
Reacting to the incidents, Obi said the continued bloodshed in parts of the country remained a painful reminder of the insecurity that had plagued many communities for years.
According to him, residents of Benue, Plateau and other affected states have continued to live under the threat of violence, displacement and loss, with devastating consequences for families and local economies.
“The relentless cycle of bloodshed in parts of our country has persisted for far too long. Families have been torn apart, communities destroyed and livelihoods disrupted. We cannot continue to accept this tragic situation as normal,” he said.
Obi stressed that the protection of lives and property remained the foremost responsibility of government, noting that every Nigerian life mattered and deserved protection.
He urged authorities to move beyond routine condemnations after attacks and adopt a more proactive, intelligence-driven approach to security, anchored on rapid response, accountability and effective law enforcement.
The former governor also called for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the attacks, insisting that impunity must not be allowed to thrive.
While extending his condolences to the bereaved families, Obi sympathised with the governments and people of Benue and Plateau states, praying for the repose of the victims and speedy recovery for those injured.
He maintained that addressing insecurity should transcend political interests, stressing that national development would remain elusive as long as citizens continued to live in fear.
“This is not about politics; it is about humanity. We must unite in securing our nation and restoring hope to our people. No society can prosper when innocent lives are lost to violence unchecked,” Obi stated.
