Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a major setback in their quest to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations play-off match on Thursday.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of progressing further in the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 and left South Africa with a lifeline in the race for a place at the global showpiece in Brazil.

The Super Falcons struggled to impose themselves in the opening exchanges as South Africa threatened first in the seventh minute through Linda Motlhalo, whose long-range effort sailed over the crossbar.

Nigeria responded three minutes later, with Rasheedat Ajibade attempting a shot from outside the penalty area, but her effort went wide.

Both sides continued to battle for supremacy in a closely contested first half, with neither team able to break the deadlock before the interval.

South Africa eventually took the lead in the 56th minute following a swift counterattack.

Hildah Magaia provided the final pass for Thembi Kgatlana, who kept her composure before slotting the ball past the Nigerian defence to give Banyana Banyana a 1-0 advantage.

Kgatlana came close to doubling the lead moments later, but she failed to keep her close-range effort on target.

The Falcons intensified their search for an equaliser and came close in the 75th minute when Uchenna Kanu rose to meet a cross, only for her header to be brilliantly saved by South African goalkeeper Kaylin Swart.

Swart’s crucial intervention proved decisive as South Africa maintained their advantage.

Just a minute later, Banyana Banyana doubled their lead.

Refiloe Jane reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the Nigerian penalty area and fired through a crowded box to make it 2-0.

South Africa almost extended their advantage immediately after the restart, but Magaia failed to keep her effort on target after connecting with a well-delivered cross.

With time running out, Nigeria pushed more players forward in search of a comeback.

The Falcons were eventually handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time after a VAR review led to the award of a penalty.

Jane was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box and was shown a second yellow card before being sent off.

Substitute Christy Ucheibe stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Nigeria pressed desperately for an equaliser in the closing stages, but South Africa defended resolutely to preserve their advantage and secure a crucial victory.

The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of advancing through the WAFCON route, while South Africa progressed to the next stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification pathway.

Banyana Banyana will now continue their pursuit of a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, while the Super Falcons will have to wait for another opportunity to return to the global stage.
