Nigeria’s promising campaign at the 2026 African U18 Beach Volleyball Development Cup in Senegal gathered further momentum as the country’s young stars continued to make their presence felt on the continental stage.
The Nigerian duo of Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh produced another commanding performance, sweeping aside Cape Verde 2–0 (21–7, 21–7) in their second match of the competition.
From the opening serve, Lawrence and Odoh imposed their authority on the contest. Their aggressive attacking play, disciplined positioning and effective communication gave Cape Verde little opportunity to settle into the match.
The first set quickly developed into a one-sided affair. Nigeria controlled the tempo from the early exchanges, building a significant advantage through well-placed serves and decisive attacks. Cape Verde struggled to cope with the pressure as the Nigerian pair raced to a 21–7 opening-set victory.
Rather than allowing their opponents a way back into the contest, Lawrence and Odoh maintained the same intensity in the second set. Their movement across the sand was sharp, while their understanding of one another continued to prove crucial.
Cape Verde attempted to respond, but Nigeria remained firmly in control. The Nigerian pair repeatedly found gaps in the opposition defence and converted their opportunities with impressive efficiency.
The scoreboard once again told the story as Nigeria closed out the second set 21–7, completing a convincing 2–0 victory.
The result means Lawrence and Odoh remain unbeaten after their opening two matches, strengthening Nigeria’s position as the competition progresses.
Beyond the result itself, the performance offered another encouraging indication of the growing potential within Nigeria’s youth beach volleyball programme. At U18 level, tournaments such as the African Development Cup provide young players with an important platform to gain international experience, test themselves against athletes from across the continent and develop the competitive mentality required for the senior game.
For Lawrence and Odoh, however, the focus will now shift quickly to the challenges ahead. An unbeaten start provides confidence, but the tournament is far from over, and the Nigerian pair will need to maintain their concentration as the level of competition increases.
Their emphatic victory over Cape Verde will certainly raise expectations, but it also demonstrates that Nigeria’s young beach volleyball players are capable of competing with authority on the African stage.
With two wins already secured, Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh have sent a clear message in Senegal: Nigeria are not merely participating—they are competing to make a serious impact.
