The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arraigned an alleged drug kingpin, three Mexican nationals and several Nigerian accomplices before the Federal High Court in Lagos over the operation of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory allegedly valued at more than ₦480 billion.

The defendants were arraigned before Justice Musa Kakaki on Friday on an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful establishment of a drug manufacturing facility, production of methamphetamine and related offences under the NDLEA Act.

According to court documents filed by the anti-narcotics agency, the alleged kingpin, 63-year-old Anochili Innocent, was charged alongside Mexican nationals Juan Carlos Meza Torrero, 49; Nemecio Martinez Felix, 46; and Jesus López Valles, 40.

Other defendants include Nwankwo Sunday Christian, 41; Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor, 38; Igwe Abuchi Remijus, 43; Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua, 23; Omonughwa Kingsley Orike, 45; and Nwobum Emeka, 59.

The NDLEA alleged that the suspects operated a sophisticated methamphetamine production network spanning Lagos and Ogun states, with investigators uncovering what officials described as one of the largest clandestine drug laboratories ever dismantled in Nigeria.

According to the agency, the suspects were arrested during coordinated intelligence-led operations carried out between May 16 and 18, 2026.

Investigators said NDLEA operatives first raided a concealed methamphetamine laboratory located within a forested area in Mowe, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, where several suspects, including the three Mexican nationals believed to possess expertise in methamphetamine production, were arrested.

The agency further told the court that the alleged mastermind, Anochili, was subsequently apprehended at his residence in Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos, following intelligence gathered during the operation.

Further investigations reportedly led to the arrest of another suspected member of the syndicate, Kingsley Orike Omonughwa, at a property in Mayfair Estate, Lakowe, while Emeka Nwobum was arrested after investigators linked him to a facility allegedly used as a strategic storage location for the cartel’s operations.

Prosecutors alleged that the syndicate established and managed an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory where approximately 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine was produced, with an estimated international street value exceeding ₦480 billion.

The NDLEA also accused the defendants of procuring and transporting large quantities of precursor chemicals used in the production of synthetic drugs from Lagos to the Ogun facility.

Among the chemicals allegedly recovered during the operation were 358 kilograms of toluene, 1,834 kilograms of hydrochloric acid, 22.5 kilograms of acetone, as well as quantities of phenyl-2-propanone (P2P) and phenyl acetic acid, all substances commonly associated with methamphetamine production.

The agency said multiple vehicles were allegedly used by the suspects to transport the chemicals and other materials required for the illicit manufacturing process.

The arraignment marks another major breakthrough in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against transnational drug trafficking networks, particularly those involved in the production and distribution of synthetic narcotics.

In recent years, the NDLEA has intensified efforts to dismantle clandestine drug laboratories across the country amid growing concerns that international drug cartels are increasingly targeting Nigeria as a production and transit hub for illicit substances destined for local and foreign markets.

The defendants are expected to face trial as the court continues proceedings on the charges brought against them by the anti-narcotics agency.
