…police apologizes, commit to change
The Nigerian Police has declared that the Special Anti Robbery Squad(SARS) which was disbanded due to public outcry over it activities was dead and buried forever even as it apologized for the brutalities and declared its commitment to change.
Speaking during a town hall meeting organized by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Mr Sunday Dare over the weekend as part of efforts to end the on going protests, Police Spokesman DCP Frank Mba said all the fundamental issues raised by the protesters were being addressed.
” SARS is dead and buried forever. This is the first time SARS was disbanded. What we had in the past were mere reforms which were not far reaching enough. Now we are doing all we can to restore the confidence of the public. This is a process and we shall continue the reforms to make the Police Force attractive to pull the best of our youth to join the police force. The best of our youth population with ethos, morals , values and education will be encouraged to join the police force. “
Speaking at the forum , Minister of Youth and Sports Development Mr Sunday Dare said “The Government is very responsive to the demands of the youth and has subscribed to the changes required. The youth represent Nigerians and the issues raised are not different from those out there and they are being looked at by the Government. I apologize to Nigerians who have suffered violation of their right due to the activities of a few bad eggs. We have set up a situation room for dialogue with the youth , let us embrace this to redress past errors “
