In a keenly contested election for the position of the president of IOC at the 144th international Olympic committee session held in Greece, Kristy Coventry Thursday emerged as the 10th president of the IOC making her the first female and African to assume the office of the president of International Olympic Committee, IOC.
Kristy Coventry a Zimbabwean who has won gold medal in swimming at different Olympic editions , won the presidential election with 49 votes out of the 97 available votes.
Coventry is currently serving as the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation in Zimbabwe since September 2018.
Kirsty Coventry, 41, will also be the youngest ever to assume the role and came through a field of seven contenders in the seaside resort of Costa Navarino in Greece to land the most powerful job in world sport.
Coventry will officially take up the role on June 24, 2015, after incumbent Thomas Bach steps down following a 12-year spell in charge of the committee
