The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has recognised the leadership of the Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) Attah John Onoja, for his role in strengthening efforts to protect Nigeria’s mineral resources and combat illegal mining activities threatening the country’s solid minerals sector.
Onoja was honoured with a Meritorious Award by the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, during the Corps’ National Armourers Retreat and Symposium.
The award, according to the Corps, was in recognition of Onoja’s dedication, professionalism, discipline and commitment to national service, particularly in leading the Mining Marshals in the fight against illegal mining, mineral theft and other economic crimes affecting the sector.
The recognition comes amid growing concerns over the activities of illegal miners, who have been accused of depriving the country of revenue from its mineral resources while contributing to environmental degradation and insecurity in mining communities.
Under Onoja’s leadership, the Mining Marshals have continued to support government efforts to sanitise the mining industry by targeting illegal mining operations and protecting strategic national assets.
The NSCDC said the award reflects the importance of the unit’s mandate in safeguarding Nigeria’s mineral wealth and ensuring that resources are preserved for the benefit of citizens.
Speaking after receiving the award, ACC Onoja expressed appreciation to the NSCDC leadership, describing the recognition as a reflection of the collective efforts of officers and men of the Mining Marshals.
“This honour is not just for me; it is a testament to the dedication, sacrifices and commitment of all officers and men of the Mining Marshals who continue to work tirelessly across the country,” he said.
Onoja attributed the achievements recorded by the unit to teamwork, resilience and the commitment of personnel to the mandate of the Corps.
“Every success we have achieved is a product of collective effort, loyalty and selfless service. We remain committed to supporting the vision of the Commandant General and protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources from exploitation by criminal elements,” he added.
The Mining Marshals Commander further pledged that the unit would intensify operations against illegal mining activities while ensuring greater protection for the nation’s solid minerals sector.
The NSCDC established the Mining Marshals to support efforts aimed at curbing illegal mining and securing mining sites across the country as part of broader measures to harness Nigeria’s mineral resources for economic development.
