Nigeria secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite finishing second in Group C, as CAF’s head-to-head tiebreak rules handed Malawi the top spot in a dramatic three-way tie.
The Super Falcons thrashed Egypt 6-2 in their final group match to finish with six points, level with Malawi and Zambia after all three teams recorded two wins and one defeat each.
Although Nigeria ended the group with a superior overall goal difference of +4, compared to Malawi’s +2, the Confederation of African Football’s competition regulations prioritize head-to-head records among teams tied on points before overall goal difference.
Malawi had defeated Nigeria 3-2 in their group meeting, while Nigeria edged Zambia 1-0 and Zambia overcame Malawi. With all three sides finishing on three points in the mini-league involving only the tied teams, further head-to-head criteria were applied, eventually leaving Zambia third.
The final ranking between Malawi and Nigeria was then determined by their direct encounter, with Malawi’s 3-2 victory over the Super Falcons proving decisive. As a result, Malawi topped Group C, while Nigeria finished second to also progress to the knockout stage.
The outcome underscores the importance of head-to-head results under CAF regulations, which take precedence over overall goal difference when teams finish level on points in the group stage.
