The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a nationwide Special Intervention Patrol aimed at reducing road traffic crashes, unveiling 12 intelligence-driven operations targeted at tackling the major causes of road accidents across the country.

The initiative, known as the Zonal Special Intervention Patrol (ZSIP), will commence on July 20 across the Corps’ 12 Zonal Commands, with each zone deploying a specially designed operation tailored to address road safety challenges peculiar to its area of responsibility.

The operations include Operation Fushin Zuma (Anger of the Bee) in Kaduna, Operation Ride Safe in Bauchi, Operation Shark Smile in Port Harcourt, Operation ABO (Safe Passage) in Lagos, Operation Sauka Lafia in Abuja, Operation Kasolayo in Ilorin, Operation Kwushi Ihe Mberede in Enugu, Operation Sanity in Osogbo, Operation Total Compliance in Benin, Operation Harbin Kunama (Scorpion Sting) in Yola, Operation Hadarin Kalangu in Jos and Operation Daidaita Loading in Zone 10.

Announcing the initiative in a statement on Sunday, the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Osondu Ohaeri, said the operation was approved by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as part of efforts to tackle persistent traffic violations and improve safety on Nigerian roads.

According to the statement, the special patrol will combine intelligence-driven enforcement, public enlightenment campaigns, enhanced operational visibility, stakeholder engagement and collaboration with other security agencies to reduce crashes and save lives.

Describing the intervention as one of the most coordinated operational strategies undertaken by the Corps in recent years, Mohammed said the programme represents a shift from conventional enforcement to targeted operations designed to address specific risk factors responsible for road crashes.

“The Special Intervention Patrol is a strategic operational initiative designed to enable every Zonal Command address its peculiar crash trends through intensive enforcement, sustained public education, stakeholder engagement, rescue preparedness and enhanced operational visibility,” he said.

The Corps Marshal explained that the operations would focus on offences and unsafe road practices that continue to result in avoidable deaths and injuries, adding that personnel would be deployed to highways, motor parks, loading points and other critical traffic corridors nationwide.

“Every operation has been carefully designed to confront specific dangerous behaviours responsible for avoidable deaths and injuries,” he stated.

Mohammed warned motorists, commercial drivers and fleet operators to comply strictly with traffic regulations, stressing that offenders would face firm but professional enforcement.

“There will be no hiding place for traffic offenders,” he warned.

While assuring law-abiding road users that the initiative is intended to protect lives rather than punish motorists, the Corps Marshal urged the public to cooperate with patrol teams by obeying traffic laws, avoiding dangerous practices such as overloading and mixed loading, and reporting reckless driving and other unsafe behaviours.

He also called on transport operators to embrace voluntary compliance, noting that road safety remains a shared responsibility requiring the collective efforts of government, transport stakeholders and road users.

“The message is unmistakable: Every Zone has a mission. Every patrol has a purpose. Every operation is a commitment to saving lives,” Mohammed said.

The FRSC said the nationwide intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety management and achieve significant reductions in traffic crashes across the country.
