From Nike to Adidas: How Nigeria Landed Africa’s Biggest Kit Sponsorship Deal

Nigeria is on the verge of entering a new commercial era after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced a landmark $8.5 million annual kit and equipment partnership with Adidas, reportedly the biggest kit sponsorship deal in African football.

The agreement, expected to begin in 2027, includes $4.5 million in direct cash and $4 million worth of kits and equipment annually, alongside a reported 20% royalty on official merchandise sold through Adidas stores in Nigeria.

The royalty component could push the overall value of the partnership beyond the headline $8.5 million, particularly as Adidas plans to expand its Nigerian retail presence.

The scale of the deal represents a major financial upgrade from Nigeria’s 11-year partnership with Nike. According to NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, the previous arrangement provided around $500,000 in cash and $1 million in equipment annually, worth approximately $1.5 million in total.

The difference has become even more significant following years of naira depreciation and rising operational costs. Gusau also argued that Nike’s equipment allocation was insufficient to cover Nigeria’s numerous senior, women’s and youth national teams, forcing the federation to spend additional funds on kits.

Adidas’ guaranteed package is therefore roughly 5.7 times the annual value cited for the Nike agreement.

The commercial potential of the new partnership, however, extends beyond the immediate financial figures. Nike’s Nigeria shirts, particularly the iconic 2018 “Naija” collection, demonstrated the global appeal of Nigerian football culture and the enormous merchandising potential of the Super Eagles brand.

With Adidas now offering the NFF a direct share of merchandise revenue, Nigeria has an opportunity to build a more sustainable football business around its national teams.

But the underlining question remains; whether the additional revenue translates into better administration, improved national-team preparation, stronger youth and women’s football, and a more commercially viable Nigerian football ecosystem.
