The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Dr. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein, issued the warning during her working visit to the Federal Pay Office in Kano.

The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has declared that it will no longer assume responsibility for unpaid liabilities incurred by state governments, urging them to improve revenue collection and financial discipline.

According to a statement from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), released by Director of Press and Public Relations, Bawa Mokwa, Madein stated the need for states to address revenue leakages to ensure financial sustainability.

“This will ensure that state governments receive their revenues as and when due, and the Federal Government will not be burdened by unpaid liabilities,” she said.

Madein
also directed Federal Pay Officers (FPOs) to enforce compliance with public financial management reforms across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

She stressed the importance of financial prudence and called for an end to manual accounting processes, advocating for modern technology in financial operations.

“The use of manual processes in carrying out financial activities will soon be over. The use of modern technology in the accounting profession is key and vital,”
she stated.

To further enhance financial accountability, the AGF revealed that her office had commenced implementing an enterprise concept management system aimed at fully digitizing financial activities, including those of FPOs.

Madein also announced a shift from the traditional Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) to a performance management system that will provide a more accurate measure of staff and management efficiency.

“This system will involve all staff and serve as a tool for measuring management performance,” she explained, urging FPOs to become proficient in digital operations.

Aminu Umar, Chairman of the Committee of FPOs for the North-West Zone, expressed appreciation for the AGF’s visit, noting its impact on shaping future financial leadership.

“It will go a long way as a pace-setter for the incoming Accountant General after your leave,” Umar stated.
