The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed that its official X account has been compromised, warning members of the public to disregard any suspicious or unauthorised posts published from the account.
The DHQ made this known in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.
According to the statement, the incident is being treated as a cybersecurity matter, with technical measures activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.
“The incident is currently being treated as a cybersecurity subject and appropriate technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access,” the statement said.
The military authorities said efforts were ongoing to regain full control of the account and restore normal operations.
The DHQ consequently advised members of the public, the media and other stakeholders to disregard any suspicious, misleading or unauthorised content that may appear on the compromised platform.
“Members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period,” the statement added.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to protecting information and ensuring that Nigerians receive accurate and verified updates on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“The DHQ remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of information security and ensuring that the public continues to receive accurate, timely and credible information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” it said.
To maintain uninterrupted communication with the public, the DHQ urged Nigerians to rely on its verified accounts on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for official information while efforts to restore the X account continue.
The military authorities said further updates would be issued as necessary.
