CARMENCITA CONSTANTIN has been elected as the President of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, it has been announced.
CONSTANTIN was one of two candidates seeking the position, with Athens 2004 Olympic bronze medallist and 2005 World Championship pommel horse silver medallist IOAN SILVIU also in contention.
The election saw CONSTANTIN receive 28 votes, with SILVIU earning 16.
CONSTANTIN will serve in the role until the ordinary Romanian Gymnastics Federation elections next year, which will see the organisation’s leadership decided on a four-year term.
She is currently serving the remainder of the term of ANDREEA RADUCAN, who had led the national federation since 2017.
RADUCAN resigned from the post at the end of 2019, after Romania’s gymnastics teams failed to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The election had initially been scheduled to take place in March, but the Romanian Gymnastics Federation was forced to postpone its General Assembly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The organisation said CONSTANTIN, a former rhythmic gymnast, has experience as a national and international coach in aerobic gymnastics.
She has also served as an aerobic gymnastics referee.
The 62-year-old has been a member of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation Executive Committee and has been chair of the Aerobic Gymnastics Technical Commission.
CONSTANTIN has also worked for seven years at the European Commission, where she has represented Romania in energy, environment and European Union funding issues.
