England booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 as Group L winners with a 2-0 victory over Panama at the New York New Jersey Stadium, which was inspired by the Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.
After a tight first half, Bellingham opened the scoring in the 62nd minute with a composed finish before creating an assist just five minutes later. Bellingham’s perfectly weighted delivery was met by Harry Kane, whose powerful header in the 67th minute sealed England’s third victory of the group stage.
While Panama frustrated England for long periods with their disciplined defensive structure and dangerous counterattacks, Thomas Tuchel’s side remained patient before their quality eventually shone through.
Bellingham dictated the tempo in midfield, linking defence and attack with authority, while Kane’s clinical finish capped another efficient outing for England.
The result ensured the Three Lions finished top of Group L with seven points, going into the knockout rounds.
However, In Group K fixture, Colombia produced another resilient display to earn a 0-0 draw against Portugal in Miami and secure top spot in the group. The South Americans defended superbly, matched Portugal’s physicality and looked the more threatening side for large spells of the contest.
Portugal, meanwhile, endured another frustrating evening in front of goal, lacking creativity and urgency despite enjoying the majority of possession. The result leaves Colombia full of confidence heading into the Round of 32, while Portugal will need a significant improvement if they hope to challenge for the World Cup crown.
