Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign ended in heartbreak as hosts Morocco edged the Super Eagles 4–2 on penalties after a tense 0–0 semi-final draw in Rabat. It was a night where fine margins, nerves, and atmosphere combined to tilt the contest in the hosts’ favour.
From kickoff, the stadium belonged to Morocco. The home fans were relentless, whistling and booing every Nigerian touch, turning each possession into a test of composure. Nigerian supporters were vastly outnumbered, and the noise never dipped, adding a psychological layer to an already cagey encounter.
On the pitch, chances were scarce. Both sides defended with discipline, cancelling out attacking threats and forcing the game into extra time without a breakthrough. Nigeria stayed compact and competitive, but clear openings proved difficult to come by as Morocco controlled tempo and territory.
The shootout ultimately decided it. Morocco were flawless from the spot, while Nigeria faltered under pressure, sending the home crowd into celebration as the Atlas Lions booked their place in the final.
Morocco will now face Senegal in the AFCON final, while Nigeria are left to reflect on a campaign that showed resilience and progress, but ended just short of the ultimate prize.
