Over 500 athletes are currently participating at the ongoing Zaria Athletics Grand Prix which kicked off on Tuesday at the Ahmadu Bello University Sports Complex, Zaria, Kaduna state.
Director of the Grand Prix, Hon.Sunday Adeleye told news men that the event is geared towards professionalism and competition among athletes which in turn build their confidence once again after months of zero competitions in track and field events.
His word: “This event is geared towards bringing professionalism to our athletes who have been training without competitions, as this Grand Prix will give them the opportunity to test their fitness level. Also, this event is meant to prepare Nigeria athletes for the All African games, Olympics and other major events.”
While thanking the hosts, Ahmadu Bello University, Adeleye commended the efforts of Hon.Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, Hon.Shehu Usman and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for making the event possible.
The event will feature competitions in the following categories, 100m,200m,400m,800m,1500m,3000m,5000m,100m,200m,400m,800m, 1500m,3000m,5000m.
Other events include; shot-put, triple jump, 4x 100 and 4×400(men and women).
Organisers say winners will receive cash rewards.
