Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN,) Samuel Onikeku has said the AFN have discovered some new athletes that can be groomed by the Federation for the Paris 2024 Olympics Games.
Onikeku said this on Monday at the closing ceremony of the 5th edition of the One Service One Medal (OSOM) at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium . According to him the reason for the event is to discover athletes that will represent the country in International competitions.
In his words: “We have athletes that have representing the country and winning medals whenever they go for national assignment.
“It is our responsibility as a federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to give them the support they need.
“We all know that this year is a world Championships and Commonwealth Games. We must keep eyes on our athletes both home and abroad.
“We must also work on how we can groom the new talented athletes for future encounters “he said.
He said the aim of OSOM Games is to identify and develop high performance athletes for the country.
“To enhance and elevate sports nationally, regional and globally,” he said.
Teams from the military and Para military agencies that participated in the OSOM Games are include ; Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Custom Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria
Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps among others.
A total of 15 sports feature in this year’s events ; including Athletics, Swimming, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Tug of War, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Squash, Scrabble.
Others are Golf, Tennis, Shooting, Table Tennis and Badminton
The 5th edition of the OSOM games which started on March 30th 2022, ended on Monday 4th April 2022 .
