Over 200 participants are expected to be part of the Fusion Tennis Foundation clinic and tournament scheduled to serves off on Tuesday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
The initiative put together by former Nigerian junior Champion, Fuad Quadre through his Fusion Tennis Foundation aimed to promote the development of the game at that level and assist junior players, who are talented but lack support to achieve their dream.
Quadre stated that the Fusion Tennis Foundation will support talents to get scholarships while revealing that one of the player discovered by the foundation is now a graduate.
“We are trying to pick out some talents that are dedicated enough and give them training throughout the year and support them to scholarships. We are very happy that one kids we discovered few years ago is now a university graduate in the United States”.
Within registration being completed on Monday ahead the activities on Tuesday. Quadre expressed excitement the level of participation and enthusiasm shown by the kids. He revealed that the first two day of the weeklong training will expose participants to the rudiments of the game while players will compete for honours in various categories in the remaining four days.
“We will have three days of clinic and the tournament that will end on Sunday. This year, we are planning to select about 10 kids that will be assisted throughout the year with their education and give them a platform that will enable them get scholarships in the United States”.
Quadre expressed concern with the level of development and lack of support for junior seek support from stakeholders and challenging the Nigeria Tennis Federation to support the Fusion Tennis Foundation to unearth and support the talents.
“We need assistance from the Nigeria Tennis Federation to be able to organize more tournaments for these kids to showcase their talents to some of the schools and get scholarships in the U.S. We don’t have enough tournaments to be able to achieve this. When they play tournaments, they can get enough points.
In Nigeria, when you giving back through charity, no one wants to support you . We are paying a lot to us the facility which I think we should be able to use for free because we are actually doing something great for the youth. I wish people can be a little more in their giving nature”.
The clinic/tournament which is in its fourth edition this year, will end on Sunday, August 20 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
