Residents of Trademore Estate, FCT, are protesting the planned demolition of the Estate by the FCT Administration.
The planned demolition follows the catastrophic flood incident in the Estate after heavy rainfall in the early hours of Friday, the 23rd of June.
Residents however came out protesting on Monday morning, calling on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to rather provide engineering solutions, than demolish houses.
Some of the residents held placards that read “Provide engineering solutions, not roadside approach”, “put an end to senseless killing”, “Trademore Estate is not a disaster zone”, etc.
A report by the FCT Administration had identified repeated flooding incidents in Trademore Estate, causing significant damage to properties and endangering lives. The administration believes that by demolishing the Estate, they can prevent future tragedies. However, residents argue that providing engineering solutions, such as improved drainage systems and flood prevention measures, would be a more sustainable and just approach.
The FCT Administration has yet to respond to the protest. As tensions continue to rise, residents are determined to fight for the preservation of their homes and the implementation of long-term solutions to prevent future flood incidents.
Recall the Permanent Secretary of the FCTA, Olusade Adesola, declared the Trademore area a disaster zone that “needs immediate action to remedy further damages and loss of lives and properties”.
