Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress made history on Saturday with a 93-88 victory over China in the opening game of the FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup taking place in Brno, Czech Republic.
China took an early lead, winning the first quarter 24-16, but Nigeria a comeback in the second quarter, outscoring China 22-20.
Nigeria’s Nora Ezike a Stanford freshman stole the show with 25 points, 6 rebounds, playing only 21 minutes.
Idubamo Beggi contributed 18 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds, for Team Nigeria while forming a lethal combination with Ezike the China struggled to contain in the final 20 minutes.
Tobenna Nweke also added 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal, while Jessica Ajayi scored 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists.
The third quarter proved pivotal, with Nigeria surging ahead 23-16, setting the stage for a tense fourth quarter.
Nigeria sealed the win with a 32-28 triumph in the final period, showcasing their determination and composure.
The win marks Nigeria’s first-ever victory in the competition.
The Junior D’Tigress next game is against Canada, another tough opponent. A win against the Canadians could boost their chances of reaching the knockout phase.
The 2025 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup is taking place in Brno, Czech Republic, and will run from 12th to 20 July 2025.
