The Federal Government has commenced the construction of the 122-kilometre Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu describing the project as the fulfilment of a promise made to residents during his 2022 presidential campaign.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Tuesday, was performed on behalf of the President by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.
Addressing stakeholders, Governor Sani recalled that Tinubu visited Birnin Gwari on December 22, 2022, despite security concerns at a time when the area was considered one of the country’s major banditry flashpoints.
He said the President had pledged to rehabilitate the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road and improve security in the area.
“Today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fulfilled both promises. We are here to witness the commencement of this very important road project,” the governor said.
Sani disclosed that the Federal Government approved ₦178 billion for the reconstruction of the highway, describing it as a strategic economic corridor linking the North-West with the South-West and facilitating the movement of people and goods across several states.
He noted that Birnin Gwari had not witnessed any major federal road project in more than 20 years, adding that the security situation has improved considerably, allowing commuters to travel without armed escorts.
The governor also said the Kaduna State Government is constructing 36 kilometres of roads connecting 72 farming communities in the local government area as part of efforts to boost agricultural activities and rural development.
He further listed other ongoing federal projects in Kaduna State, including the approved $865 million Kaduna Light Rail Project, the Western Bypass and the planned continuation of the Eastern Bypass.
In his remarks, Minister of Works David Umahi described President Tinubu as “a promise keeper,” saying the administration is committed to equitable infrastructure development across the country.
Umahi also praised Governor Sani for fostering peace and unity in Kaduna State, saying the prevailing security improvements have made it possible for major development projects to take off.
The Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road is expected to improve connectivity, facilitate trade and agricultural activities, and enhance security and economic development across the region once completed.
