The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commissioned the newly upgraded Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), as the Federal Government approved ₦46 billion for the rehabilitation of the airport’s primary and secondary runways.

The projects are part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to modernise airport infrastructure, improve passenger experience and strengthen Kano’s position as a major aviation hub in Northern Nigeria.

The upgraded terminal, commissioned on Tuesday, features modern baggage handling systems, enhanced check-in facilities, improved passenger lounges, upgraded air-conditioning systems and other critical infrastructure designed to provide travellers with a more efficient and world-class airport experience.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, said the project underscores the Authority’s commitment to transforming airport infrastructure and improving service delivery across Nigeria.

“This upgraded terminal reflects FAAN’s commitment to transforming airport infrastructure and elevating the passenger experience across Nigeria,” Kuku said.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), announced that the Federal Government had approved ₦46 billion for the rehabilitation of the airport’s primary and secondary runways.

According to the minister, the runway rehabilitation project will further enhance the operational capacity of the airport while reinforcing Kano’s strategic role as a key aviation gateway serving Northern Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The Chairman of the FAAN Board of Directors, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, described the commissioning of the upgraded terminal as another milestone in the Federal Government’s drive to renew critical infrastructure under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This project demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure renewal and the continued development of Nigeria’s aviation sector,” Ganduje said.

He commended the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the management of FAAN for delivering projects aimed at strengthening the nation’s aviation industry and stimulating economic growth.

The commissioning of the terminal forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise airports across the country, improve operational efficiency, boost passenger comfort and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

With the planned rehabilitation of the runways, stakeholders expect the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport to handle increased air traffic, improve safety standards and support commercial, business and cargo operations within the region.
