The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening sustainable regulatory systems to ensure Nigerians have access to safe, quality and efficacious medicines as well as nutritious foods.

Adeyeye stated this while delivering a goodwill message at the Mid-Year Review of Nigeria’s Health Sector Reforms and Policy Dialogue.

She noted that achieving Universal Health Coverage would remain difficult without reliable access to essential health commodities, stressing the need for effective regulatory systems, quality management and a competent workforce to achieve sustainable health outcomes.

“Universal Health Coverage cannot be achieved without reliable access to essential health commodities,” the NAFDAC Director-General said.

Adeyeye said the agency had made progress in strengthening its regulatory systems through the implementation of standard operating procedures, quality management systems and the World Health Organisation Global Benchmarking Tool.

She explained that the measures were part of efforts to improve the agency’s regulatory capacity and ensure that products available to Nigerians met required standards of safety, quality and efficacy.

According to her, the progress recorded by NAFDAC reflects its broader focus on building sustainable systems and strengthening institutional capacity.

“These achievements reflect NAFDAC’s focus on building sustainable systems and institutional capacity, while strengthening Nigeria’s regulatory framework and contributing to public health protection,” she said.

She reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting ongoing health sector reforms and ensuring that Nigeria’s regulatory framework contributes effectively to improved health outcomes.
