The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has met with Google Global Lead for Civic Responsibility, David J. Lopez, as Nigeria explores the role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in strengthening electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan met Lopez on Friday, September 11, 2026, in Ottawa, Canada, on the sidelines of the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections.

The conference brings together election management bodies, technology experts and other stakeholders to examine the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence in electoral processes.

The engagement comes as INEC prepares for the 2027 general elections, with technology expected to remain a major component of Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly in voter information, election administration, communication and the protection of electoral integrity.

The meeting with Google’s global civic responsibility lead is expected to provide an opportunity for discussions around responsible technology deployment and how emerging digital tools can support credible and transparent elections.

The conference is also examining concerns surrounding the growing use of artificial intelligence in elections, including the potential impact of misinformation, disinformation and other technology-driven challenges on voters and electoral stakeholders.

Amupitan was accompanied at the meeting by the Director of Information and Communication Technology, Dr Lawrence Bayode.

The INEC chairman’s participation in the conference forms part of the commission’s engagement with international stakeholders on emerging technologies and their implications for election management as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 polls.
