The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Senator David Mark, has charged the party’s governorship candidates to shun hate speech, ethnic and religious profiling, violence and empty promises as they commence preparations for the 2027 general election.
Mark gave the charge on Monday in Abuja at a consultation meeting with governorship candidates of the ADC from across the country at the party’s national secretariat.
The former Senate President urged the candidates to ensure that their campaigns reflected the values and principles of the ADC, warning that making promises they had no intention of fulfilling could damage the credibility of both the candidates and the party.
Mark said, “We are ADC. Our campaign must reflect the kind of country that we would like to build. Avoid hate speech, ethnic or religious profiling. We cannot be associated with violence in whatever form.”
He added, “Unlike the ruling party and the President, ADC does not believe that all is fair in politics.”
The ADC chairman urged the candidates to familiarise themselves with the party’s Governance and Ethical Principles, as contained in its ‘Orange Book’, as well as the party’s manifesto.
He said adherence to the party’s principles would be critical to ensuring that the ADC’s campaign remained issue-based and focused on providing solutions to the challenges confronting Nigerians.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the governorship candidates to express appreciation to the party for providing them with a platform to contest the 2027 elections.
The candidates expressed support for the decision of the party and its presidential candidate to anchor the ADC campaign on reducing the cost of living and improving the welfare of Nigerians.
They particularly welcomed the proposal to restore fuel subsidy as part of measures aimed at reducing the cost of petrol and easing the economic burden on citizens.
The candidates pledged their loyalty to the party and vowed to work towards securing victory for the ADC in their respective states.
The meeting is part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 general election as the ADC seeks to strengthen its structures and present candidates across the country.
