One person was killed while another sustained gunshot wounds after troops of Sector 4, Operation Enduring Peace, foiled an attack by suspected bandits on Nyerwai and Rayidi communities in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 11:05 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, when troops deployed at Dorowa Babuje responded to reports of sporadic shootings in the two communities.
A military source said the troops arrived at the scene and found the lifeless body of a 37-year-old man identified as Danya Nuhu.
The troops also rescued 28-year-old Abednego Davou, who sustained gunshot injuries during the attack. Three cattle were also found injured by gunfire.
According to the source, preliminary investigations indicated that the attack was carried out by suspected armed militias who fled into the surrounding area after sighting the advancing troops.
The injured victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Barkin Ladi, where he is receiving medical attention.
The source said troops have intensified efforts to track down the fleeing attackers and bring them to justice.
The military has also sustained patrols across the Operation Enduring Peace Joint Operations Area, particularly around vulnerable communities, schools, places of worship and other critical infrastructure.
The intensified operations, according to the military, are aimed at preventing further attacks, protecting residents and maintaining peace across the area.
