Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the opposition coalition will unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, while confirming that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing Obi to a single four-year term if elected.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Kwankwaso dismissed suggestions that President Tinubu would be difficult to defeat, insisting that Nigerians were ready for a new direction and that the NDC ticket offered a credible alternative.

The former Kano State governor also disclosed that the alliance between him and Obi was built on a written power-sharing agreement under which Obi would serve only one four-year term before power returns to the North in 2031.

“We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” Kwankwaso said when asked whether Obi’s one-term pledge had been formally documented.

He said he had no reason to doubt Obi’s commitment to the agreement.”Oh yes, I personally believe him. I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, that he will change his mind when the time comes, and we are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” he said.

According to Kwankwaso, the agreement provides that the NDC administration would serve one term from 2027 to 2031 before the presidency returns to the North.

“The agreement is that after four years, we will work together as a group, as a party, as friends and brothers so that after our term from 2027 to 2031, it comes back to the North,” he said.

Kwankwaso also defended his decision to accept the vice-presidential slot despite previously seeking the presidency, saying both leaders agreed that a four-year southern presidency would strengthen national unity and promote equity.

The remarks reinforce his recent rejection of claims that he was working behind the scenes for President Tinubu’s re-election.

In May, the former Kano governor described such allegations as false, insisting he was not aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi had earlier pledged to serve only one term if elected president, saying he would not remain in office beyond four years.

Political observers say Kwankwaso’s latest comments underscore the NDC’s strategy of combining a power-rotation arrangement with a united opposition campaign as it seeks to challenge the incumbent administration in the 2027 general election.
