The group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations delivered its usual mix of tension and intrigue, with results underlining just how narrow the margins have become at continental level. From opening kick-off to final matchday, few teams found the group phase straightforward, and several contests were decided by moments rather than dominance.

Established sides progressed, but often with little room to spare. Nigeria’s 2–1 win over Tanzania, for instance, reflected a wider trend — favourites doing just enough through structure and efficiency rather than control alone. Across the groups, a series of narrow victories and hard-fought draws reinforced the importance of game management in tournament football.

Underdogs, meanwhile, continued to shape the narrative. Multiple lower-ranked teams frustrated more fancied opponents, pushing matches deep into second halves and forcing tactical adjustments. Tight scorelines, including several one-goal games and late equalisers, highlighted the growing organisation and belief among emerging nations.

From a tactical perspective, the group stage was defined by compact defensive blocks, disciplined midfield play and decisive set-piece moments. Teams that managed transitions well generally advanced, while those chasing games against organised opposition often struggled to regain control.

Now, attention turns to the knockout rounds. With patterns established and confidence gained on both ends of the spectrum, AFCON moves into its most unforgiving phase, where structure, execution and mental sharpness will matter more than reputation.
