As the Nigeria Cricket Federation heads toward a pivotal election cycle, one name
stands out for consistent performance, deep grassroots impact, and transformative
leadership, Tayo Atoloye, the incumbent Zonal Representative for the South-West zone.
Over the last four years, Atoloye has not just held a seat on the board; he has left an
unmistakable mark on the sport’s trajectory in the region. His tenure has been defined
by action, not rhetoric, anchored by a strategic focus on infrastructure, youth
development, and institutional growth.
On the Field: Building the Foundations of Cricket Excellence.
Atoloye’s approach to cricket development has been holistic. His efforts led to the
construction and renovation of cricket facilities in all 6 South-West states – Lagos,
Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti. These projects have given hundreds of young players
access to proper playing facility, marking a foundational shift in how cricket is played
and perceived at the grassroots level. This is a notable accomplishment, first of a kind.
He further strengthened the ecosystem by donating cricket equipment – bats, pads, kits,
and balls to all the 6 states in the region, ensuring that talent is not hindered by lack of
tools. This personal investment has sparked cricket participation in zones where the
game was once only aspirational.
His fundraising efforts have also been pivotal. Atoloye championed the annual welfare
campaign that has ensured the SW male and female teams consistently attended the
PWC U17 National Finals since 2021, a critical platform for emerging talent. He has also
consistently contributed to any cricket related activity within and outside his zone
whenever called upon.
In the Boardroom: Voice of Progress and Reform
Beyond the field, Atoloye has played a powerful role in shaping policy and technical
strategy for Nigerian cricket. As Chairman of the Technical and Media Committees
during two ICC events in 2024 and 2025, and as an active member of the HighPerformance, Development, and Audit Committees, his contributions have been central
to Nigeria’s national cricket evolution.
He also prioritized capacity building by sponsoring regional elite umpires for
international Level 2 and Level 3 certification. This push has raised the officiating standard across the region, ensuring matches are run professionally and in line with
global best practices.
What’s Next: Vision for a Sustainable Future
Tayo Atoloye isn’t running on promises, he’s running on a proven track record with a
clear plan to do even more. His agenda for the next four years includes launching a
Zonal High-Performance Program, expanding SW regional competitions across male
and female categories, driving coach and umpire certifications, and strengthening
women’s cricket inclusion.
He also plans to deploy data-driven systems for player development and pursue
public-private partnerships to build more turf wickets and upgrade existing grounds.
