The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT Chapter, has applauded the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its landmark initiative in constructing a state-of-the-art Players’ Hostel and new training pitches in Abuja.
In a statement signed by FCT SWAN Secretary Samuel Ahmadu on Tuesday, March 18, Chairman Kelechi Onwudiwe described the project as a significant boost to football infrastructure in Nigeria.
The 68-room facility and two training pitches, situated at Package B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, opposite the NFF Secretariat, were inaugurated amid high expectations.
Onwudiwe, a renowned broadcaster, emphasized that the initiative, funded through FIFA’s Forward 3.0 program, underscores the commitment of the Ibrahim Musa Gusau-led NFF administration to improving national team players’ welfare and strengthening football development.
“This project is a game-changer for Nigerian football. A world-class hostel and upgraded training facilities will enhance team preparations while reducing accommodation and logistics costs. We commend the NFF for this visionary step and appreciate FIFA’s continued support in strengthening our football ecosystem,” he stated.
FCT SWAN also lauded FIFA’s sustained investment in Nigerian football and the NFF’s strategic use of funds for long-term growth. The association looks forward to the project’s full completion and its lasting impact on the game.
The well-attended inauguration featured dignitaries such as Honourable Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi (MFR), Chairman of the National Sports Commission Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Senator Abdul Ningi, and FIFA’s Deputy Chief Member Association Officer and Regional Director (Africa) Gelson Fernandes, alongside football legends and elite sports administrators.
