The Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has presented a piece of land to the National Human Rights Commission to erect a permanent structure that will serve as a befitting office Commission complex in Adamawa State.
The Governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff Professor Maxwell Gidado made the presentation at the opening session of the National Human Rights Commission’s Special Investigation Panel on alleged Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) sitting in Yola the Adamawa State capital.
Professor Gidado said the Governor, a human rights advocate has approved a land measuring 4 square meters for the building of the Commission’s State office to assist the Commission to seamlessly deliver on its statutory mandate of promotion protection and enforcement of human rights in the State.
Speaking further Professor Gidado said “the government is aware of the need for the Commission to have a befitting edifice in order for the vulnerable, the abused and the downtrodden members of the society to channel their complaints”
He expressed the readiness of the State government to fight the scourge of SGBV, hence its collaboration with the Commission to see the end of all forms of SGBV in Adamawa State.
Responding, the Executive Secretary of the Commission Tony Ojukwu Esq, applauded the State government’s efforts for giving the Commission land and ensuring that it’s own its own building .”We were renting but now we will be building “ Ojukwu said.
The Chief human rights officer expressed delight in seeing the number of people coming out en mass on issues of SGBV, according to him, this shows their readiness and commitment to bring the menace of SGBV to an end in Adamawa state.
He said the Commission will do all that is within its powers to ensure that justice is served and the perpetrators of SGBV brought to book.
