Media practitioners have been called upon to support government and relevant agencies in the fight against viral diseases through effective information dissemination.
This is the thrust of a one day Media Orientation Workshop on Measles Awareness and Prevention, Immunization, Nutrition and Covid-19.
The workshop organized by the Ekiti State Primary Healthcare Development Agency in partnership with UNICEF is aimed at propelling media workers to focus more on health related issues and educate members of the public on the prevention of viral diseases and the need to take necessary precautions.
In a paper presentation, the Ekiti State Health Educator, MRS ADEKEMI AJAYI said media remains a powerful tool to reach out quickly to the large audience and because members of the public reposed much confidence in the information on the media.
She urged the participants to carry out more reports that would educate members of the public on how to ensure a society devoid of viral diseases.
Speaking on nutrition, a nutrition officer, DR FUNMILAYO OMOTOYE called on parents to give qualitative and balanced diet to their children so as to boost their immune system against viral diseases.
DR OMOTOYE explained that children, expectant mothers and the aged were the most vulnerable to viral diseases hence they should be given extra Care.
Also the Director Disease Control and Immunization OLATUNDE ODEBUNMI appealed to members of the public to adhere to all standard precautions outlined by the World Health Organization against covid-19 and other viral diseases.
Similarly, the UNICEF Senior State Health Facilitator, YAHAYA OLORIEGBE said the covid-19 pandemic had not in any way halted the health services at the primary healthcare facilities urging parents to always visit health facilities in their area to immunize their children.
Earlier, the Chairman Ekiti State Primary Healthcare Development Agency DR .MONISOLA OLORO and the Permanent Secretary of the agency MRS OLABISI AROGUNDADE appealed to members of the public to maintain hygienic environment and embrace regular immunization .
