Nigeria Police Highlights INTERPOL Collaboration in Fight Against Transnational Crime

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to international law enforcement cooperation, saying collaboration with INTERPOL and other global police organisations has strengthened efforts to combat transnational crime and protect vulnerable persons.

The Force made this known on Monday in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, to mark the United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation.

The police noted that criminal networks increasingly operate across national borders, with online fraudsters targeting victims in different countries and organised crime groups moving people, illicit goods and proceeds across jurisdictions.

It said effective policing therefore requires sustained cooperation, timely intelligence sharing and coordinated action among law enforcement agencies.

According to the statement, international police cooperation has yielded practical results for Nigeria, including the identification and location of victims, recovery of stolen property, tracking of fugitives, disruption of organised criminal networks and the fight against cyber-enabled crimes.

The Force cited the arrest of Victor Benjamin Fejemirokum, a murder suspect wanted in connection with the abduction and killing of an FRSC officer and her daughter in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The police said Fejemirokum was traced to Ghana after investigators followed his movements through a viral social media video. He was subsequently arrested by the Ghana Police Service and repatriated to Nigeria.

The Force also highlighted the arrest of Mark Sunny Okoh, a Brazilian national wanted in connection with cocaine trafficking, who allegedly fled Brazil after jumping bail.

Okoh was arrested in Okota, Lagos, following international coordination, while extradition proceedings to Brazil were subsequently initiated.

The police said such cooperation had strengthened the ability of law enforcement agencies to track fugitives across borders and ensure that international boundaries were not exploited to evade justice.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to deepening its partnership with INTERPOL and other international law enforcement agencies.

“Effective information sharing, coordinated investigations, capacity building and cross-border operational support are essential to confronting emerging security threats and ensuring that criminals cannot exploit jurisdictional boundaries to evade justice,” Disu said.

The IGP said the Nigeria Police Force would continue to strengthen international partnerships to enhance intelligence-led policing, support investigations and improve the collective capacity of law enforcement agencies to respond to transnational crimes.

The Force, while marking the UN International Day of Police Cooperation, also pledged to continue working with law enforcement partners within and outside Nigeria to protect lives and property, support victims and build safer communities.
