The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure has developed and introduced more than 40 products spanning electric mobility, renewable energy, healthcare, agriculture and information technology, as part of efforts to strengthen local manufacturing and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports.

The agency disclosed this on Sunday in a statement marking three years of institutional reforms and technology commercialisation under its current leadership.

The products include electric tricycles, compressed natural gas conversion solutions, solar irrigation pumps, solar home systems, batteries, smartphones, tablets, laptops, televisions, rapid diagnostic kits and clean cookstoves.

NASENI said the products were developed across renewable energy, transportation, agriculture, healthcare, information technology, clean cooking and education, in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda on local production and economic development.

The agency said its reforms were aimed at bridging the gap between research and industrial production by connecting innovation with funding, manufacturing, technical skills and access to markets.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Khalil Halilu, said Nigeria had the human capacity required to develop innovative technologies but needed a stronger system for moving ideas from research laboratories to the marketplace.

“Nigeria has capable engineers, researchers and innovators. What has often been missing is a connected system that can identify promising ideas, develop them, finance them, manufacture them and take them to the market,” Halilu said.

The agency said its innovation-to-industry pipeline now covers talent discovery, research funding, incubation, product development, commercialisation and market access.

N229m grants awarded to researchers

NASENI said it awarded N229m in research commercialisation grants to 14 researchers in 2025.

The beneficiaries are working on projects covering agriculture, clean energy, healthcare, mobility and digital security.

The agency also said it had digitised key processes, strengthened internal audit and reporting systems and introduced an Enterprise Resource Planning system as part of efforts to improve efficiency and accountability.

In infrastructure development, NASENI said work was ongoing on a 40-hectare Solar Industrial Park in Gora, Nasarawa State, while an electric vehicle assembly facility was being developed at Abuja Technology Village.

The agency added that CNG conversion and reverse-engineering centres had been established in Abuja, while solar-powered irrigation technology was being deployed under the Irrigate Nigeria Project.

NASENI expands healthcare, renewable energy projects

In the healthcare sector, the agency said the NASENI-Troment Rapid Diagnostics Factory in Abuja was being developed to support the local production of medical diagnostic products.

It also said it had established more than 50 local and international partnerships covering renewable energy, automotive technology, agriculture, healthcare, defence, aerospace and research.

NASENI said the partnerships were intended to facilitate technology transfer, build local capacity and support the development of commercially viable Nigerian technologies.

The agency, however, acknowledged that while some of its factories and products were already operational, others remained at various stages of development, testing and commercialisation.

It said the next phase of its programme would focus on scaling up commercial production, increasing local content, improving standards and certification, raising factory utilisation and expanding market adoption.

Halilu said the ultimate measure of the agency’s success would be the extent to which its innovations translate into sustainable businesses, jobs and increased economic value for Nigeria.

“The real test is whether our products are adopted, our factories operate sustainably, our partnerships transfer useful capabilities, our trainees secure livelihoods and more value remains within the Nigerian economy,” he said.
