The Nigerian Army on Saturday said it had detected and was responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, warning members of the public and the media against relying on suspicious or unverified messages from the platform.
The Army said the incident, which occurred at about 5pm on August 29, was being treated as a cybersecurity breach, with immediate technical and protective measures activated to prevent further unauthorised access and protect the integrity of information disseminated through the account.
In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, the Army said efforts were underway to secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.
“The incident is being treated as a cybersecurity breach, with immediate technical and protective measures activated to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform,” the statement said.
The Army advised the public, journalists and other stakeholders to disregard any suspicious, misleading, unauthorised or unverified content posted through the affected account.
“Such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army,” it said.
The Army urged members of the public and the media to verify information through its other official communication channels pending the full resolution of the incident.
It reiterated its commitment to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication, adding that further updates would be provided as efforts to fully resolve the breach continued.
The Army listed its other official platforms as Facebook and Instagram accounts, @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo, its X account, @nigerianarmyinfo, as well as its YouTube channels, @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfotv.
“The Nigerian Army appreciates the vigilance, understanding and cooperation of the public and will provide further updates as necessary,” the statement added.
