The Falconets of Nigeria secured a narrow but important 1–0 victory over Senegal in the first leg of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier played at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday.
The breakthrough in the cagey encounter eventually came after the substitute Kindness Ifeanyi scored a header from a corner kick.
The victory was almost marred by an unfortunate injury to Janet Akekoromowei, one of Nigeria’s key attacking threats.
Akekoromowei who has been instrumental in the Falconets’ attacking setup, providing pace, creativity, and goal-scoring presence in the final third.
The injury forced an early tactical adjustment for Nigeria and slightly disrupted the team’s attacking rhythm. Losing a player of her quality, especially during a crucial qualifying campaign, could affect the team’s overall attacking balance and depth heading into the decisive return leg.
Beyond the immediate impact on the team, Akekoromowei’s injury could have broader implications for her personal career trajectory.
The result places the Falconets in a strong position as they prepare for the second leg in Senegal on February 14.
