Nigeria’s only surviving player in the women’s singles Offiong Edem has won her way into the semifinal stage after a classy display against Egypt’s Mariam Alhodaby in the quarterfinal of the 13th African Games taking place in Accra, Ghana.
Accra International Conference Centre is hosting the table tennis event and Edem who had on Monday, March 4, defeated Marwa Alhodaby 3-0 in the last 16 of the women’s singles avenged her several losses to the Alhodabys with a commanding 4-2 win over Mariam to be certain of a medal in the singles.
A joyful Edem said she took her time to watch her opponent throughout the night. “I did not sleep throughout the night as I watched all her matches because she is a very good player who likes to rally. But I know that for me to beat her I had to fight throughout and made use of my service which really worked for me. She had defeated me twice and today, I was able to avenge all my losses,” a relieved Edem said.
