Patricia John from Delta state on Saturday emerged champion of the maiden edition of the Global Harmony Envoy International Initiatives (GHEII) Open Darts Championship, in Abuja

John defeated Queeneth Nwachukwu of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), by 4-1 in the finals of the 501 darts women’s singles.

In the final game played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, John, who is the defending champion of the Darts game, defeated Nwachukwu to consolidate her prowess in retaining her title.

Speaking to sports journalists after her victory, John said she was happy to have won the final game again, adding that she would continue to work hard and train to win more games.

“It  is a tough game , my opponent played well, but I’m happy that I won the best of seven to make the score 4-1.

“This is not my first time of taking first position, it has been a while I have been in the championship since 2014 in Ilesha.

“I also won a gold and silver for my state at the National Sports Festival (NSF). I will continue to work hard and train to win more games,” she said.

Nwachukwu, on the other hand, said she fought to win the final game hoping to become the champion, but was disappointed she lost in the finals.

”The person that won is a strong player and she is a champion. I will go back to train  more against next year’s festival,” she said.

Borokini Kehinde from Lagos and Oluchi Ibe from River State were joint third place winners in the championship.

A total of 12 States, the FCT and four clubs, participated in the four-day championship, which featured Bayelsa, Abia, Lagos, Benue, Imo, Kwara, Rivers, Delta, Ogun, Edo, Niger and Oyo state, alongside four clubs.

The clubs included the Nigeria Police Force (NPF),  Nigeria Air Force (NAF), United Nigerian Textiles Limited (UNTL) in Kaduna, and National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT) in Zaria.

The championship, which started on Wednesday, ended  on Saturday .
